The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken discussed with the Kenyan President, William Ruto the developments concerning the Sudan crisis and peace talks in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The US Department of State issued a statement this Saturday, acknowledging Blinken’s discourse with President Ruto. The US expressed its appreciation for Kenya’s contributions to regional peace and stability. This appreciation included Kenya’s leadership role in addressing the Sudan crisis and propelling the East African-led discussions aimed at easing tensions in eastern DRC.
The State Department’s communique further detailed Blinken’s advocacy for “peaceful and constructive dialogue” to resolve political disputes in Kenya. Additionally, the Secretary of State discussed Kenya’s progressive approach to spearhead a multinational force in Haiti.
The conflict in Sudan, which broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15, occurred amidst the military and civilian parties’ finalization of a political process. This process was expected to culminate in the establishment of a civilian-led government.
The US’s active involvement through its Secretary of State in discussing these key African geopolitical issues underscores the continued commitment of the United States in ensuring stability in the African region. It’s evident that Kenya’s significant role in the peacekeeping efforts in the area is recognized and appreciated at the highest levels of the American administration.
