Jeremy Brent, the Acting U.S. Ambassador to Libya, has pledged his country’s support to the Libyan Reconstruction and Development Fund’s efforts aimed at rebuilding and developing the war-torn nation.
This commitment was made during a meeting with Belkasem Khalifa Haftar, the General Manager of the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund, according to a statement released by the Benghazi Municipality on Sunday evening.
The meeting, which took place at the Fund’s headquarters in Benghazi, was attended by several notable figures including the head of Benghazi’s Municipal Council, Saqr Omran Bu Jwari, Chairman of the Reconstruction and Stability Committee, Hatem Al-Areibi, and Dr. Aqila Al-Abbar.
They discussed ways to enhance cooperation with U.S. institutions and companies and explored how these entities could participate in targeted reconstruction programs.
Key ongoing projects in Benghazi were highlighted during the discussions.
These include the construction of a sports city, the rebuilding of the Sabri area and Souq al-Hout, and various infrastructure projects, including the reconstruction of the University of Benghazi.
The dialogue also covered reconstruction projects in Derna and other flood-affected cities, as well as in the southern regions of Libya, which have suffered from prolonged neglect by successive governments.
Jeremy Brent reiterated the U.S.’ readiness to support the Fund’s management in its reconstruction and development efforts, aligning with established priorities and operational approaches.
Belkasem Haftar stressed the importance of mutual cooperation and invited the American acting ambassador and his delegation to visit Derna to observe the progress made on ongoing projects.
This initiative marks a crucial step towards Libya’s recovery from years of conflict and instability, fostering hope for a stabilized and thriving future supported by strategic international partnerships.
