The Wall Street Journal reported today, citing U.S. officials, that President Joe Biden’s administration is looking to financially support the Palestinian Authority. The administration is seeking ways to circumvent a law that prevents it from providing direct financial assistance to the authority.
This comes amid warnings from Palestinian officials that the authority’s funds are running low, which could jeopardize U.S. hopes for the Palestinian Authority to govern the Gaza Strip after the end of the Israeli war, as mentioned by the Arab News Agency. The U.S. administration is also urging allies to provide more financial aid to the Palestinian Authority. U.S. officials mentioned that Palestinian officials have warned that the funds needed to pay salaries and provide basic government services might run out very soon, possibly by the end of this month.
Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza on October 7, the United States, under President Biden’s administration, has maintained a strong stance in support of Israel. President Biden has been unequivocal in backing Israel and condemning Hamas. Following a strike at the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza, Biden expressed outrage and emphasized the United States’ commitment to the protection of civilian life during conflict. Despite the tragic events, the U.S. has continued to provide robust support to Israel, reaffirming its position as Israel’s closest ally in the Middle East.
In terms of military aid, the Biden administration, along with prominent members of Congress, has been preparing a substantial aid package for Israel, with reports suggesting an additional funding amounting to about $2 billion. High-level U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III, have reiterated America’s commitment to Israel’s security, with Austin announcing the dispatch of a second aircraft carrier to the eastern Mediterranean to deter hostile actions against Israel. The Pentagon has also sent special operations forces to assist the Israeli military with planning and intelligence.
Public attitudes in the U.S. towards the Israel-Gaza war seem to be divided along partisan lines, with a notable increase among Republicans in their desire for the U.S. to lean toward Israel, and a decline among Democrats who wish for the U.S. to remain neutral. President Biden’s perceived pro-Israel stance has led to varying opinions among the American public, with more respondents labeling Biden as “too pro-Israeli” than “too pro-Palestinian.” However, a significant portion of the public remains undecided on Biden’s position on the issue.
