The US Embassy in Ukraine announced on Monday that Ukraine and the United States have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will provide Kyiv with up to $522 million to bolster the resilience of Ukraine’s energy system.
In a statement released on Sunday, the embassy detailed that Ukraine will receive $422 million in new energy assistance, while an additional $100 million will be subject to specific measures, including reforms.
One of the key objectives of this aid package is to assist Ukraine in rebuilding critical infrastructure, especially in the wake of Russian airstrikes on energy facilities and substations that left millions without electricity during some periods last winter.
Since then, Ukraine has undertaken extensive reforms, but officials have cautioned about the possibility of new attacks this winter. Indeed, Russia recently struck energy facilities across Ukraine.
The US Embassy underscored that the MOU also aims to help Ukraine work towards the reform and transition of its energy sector after the conflict with Russia, moving towards a competitive, low-carbon energy economy integrated with the European Union.
