In an escalation of military operations in Yemen, US and UK forces launched six airstrikes on Hodeidah International Airport in western Yemen, as reported today by Al-Masirah TV, which is affiliated with the Houthi movement “Ansar Allah”.
The specifics of the damage, either material or human, have not been detailed further by the channel.
The airport, situated on the Red Sea coast, is a critical asset in one of Yemen’s most vital provinces due to its international status and extensive coastal strip. This strategic location has been a focal point in the ongoing conflict.
The Houthi rebels, who have controlled large parts of Yemen since November, have been conducting operations in the Red Sea, targeting Israeli ships or those en route to Israel, in support of the Palestinian people and Gaza.
This has prompted the United States and its allies to form a military coalition to address the Houthi attacks, leading to several targeted strikes across different areas of Yemen.
Additionally, the US military occasionally undertakes separate missions in the region, independent of any maritime coalition.
Al-Masirah also reported the downing of an American MQ-9 drone in Al Bayda province, showcasing the ongoing tension and complex military dynamics in the region.
Earlier this month, the US Central Command announced that the American destroyer USS Mason intercepted an anti-ship missile launched by Houthi forces over the Red Sea on Monday.
The interception followed claims by the Houthis that they had targeted the American warship.
The US Central Command confirmed that US forces subsequently destroyed two drones. Additionally, Houthi forces claimed to have targeted another US vessel, the Destiny, in the Red Sea.
