The White House has announced its intention to draft a new proposal aimed at securing the release of two American prisoners in Russia. This comes after Moscow rejected a previous American attempt, as reported by The Washington Times.
John Kirby, the spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council, informed journalists, “We are working diligently to see what we can do to come up with another proposal that might be more successful.”
Earlier this month, the U.S. State Department revealed that Russia had declined a “substantial” offer to release the Americans – Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal correspondent, and Paul Whelan, a former Navy soldier. Russian President Vladimir Putin later stated that he is hopeful for a resolution but emphasized that the U.S. needs to make a decision that is acceptable to the Russian Federation.
Gershkovich, 32, was arrested in Yekaterinburg in the Ural Mountains at the end of March while on a journalistic assignment. He is the first Western journalist to be accused of espionage since the Soviet era and has vehemently denied the allegations. Meanwhile, Whelan, 53, was working in security for an American auto parts company when he was arrested in Moscow in 2018. He is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence after being convicted of espionage, a charge the U.S. government asserts is baseless.
Kirby added that despite Putin’s remarks, the U.S. had recently put forward a new offer, which was nevertheless rejected by the Russians.
The ongoing efforts by the U.S. government to negotiate the release of Evan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan highlight the complex diplomatic dynamics between the United States and Russia. The situation continues to evolve as the White House seeks a resolution acceptable to both nations.
