The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday expressed deep concern about the ongoing attacks in Rafah, Palestine, and called for an immediate ceasefire.
“The recent attacks on Rafah have forced the majority of Gaza’s population to flee their homes in search of safety,” said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “The health system in Gaza is already on the brink of collapse, and these attacks are only making the situation worse.”
15 Hospitals Partially or Minimally Functional
According to WHO, only 15 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are still partially or minimally functional. Health workers are struggling to cope with the influx of wounded patients, and essential medical supplies are running low.
“WHO has delivered 447 tons of medical supplies to Gaza, but this is just a drop in the bucket compared to the needs,” said Dr. Ghebreyesus. “We urgently need safe access for humanitarian workers and supplies to reach those in need.”
1.5 Million People in Rafah
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that the Israeli bombardment of Gaza has continued unabated, causing widespread civilian casualties, displacement, and destruction of civilian infrastructure.
The escalation of airstrikes in Rafah has raised particular concern, as the city is now home to an estimated 1.5 million Palestinians. This is more than five times its pre-war population.
Urgent Action Needed
WHO and OCHA call for an immediate ceasefire to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid and to prevent further suffering.
